Boxes of Contribution Envelopes are still available on the Welcome Table.  Since most people contribute by check, the envelopes no longer need numbers or names. If you contribute cash, there is a space on the envelope to write your name.
BISHOP'S VISITATION- Sunday, February 1, 11 a.m.

We welcome Bishop Stacy F. Sauls who will be here with us to officially confirm and receive new members into the Episcopal Church and our congregation.

Bishop Sauls has served as the the Chief Operating Officer for the Episcopal Church since 2011.  As COO, he coordinates the work of the Episcopal Church's mission program, communication, finance and administration while assisting the Presiding Bishop.  He previously served 11 years as Bishop of Lexington, Kentucky and 12 years as a priest in several churches in Georgia, his place of birth.

This Fall, the Vestry of Christ Church Riverdale approved a project to replace our ailing furnace in the church basement.  Its' days are numbered and it will soon be unrepairable.
The total cost of this project is $62,500.  This included $9,000 to clean the basement and bring the space up to code.  The remainder provided for the purchase of the new furnace and other costs related  to design, permits and installation.
To fund the replacement, CCR has received a grant from the Diocesan Property Support Committee in the amount of $12,500 and a loan from them for $25,000. The remaining $25,000 has been met through the generosity of a parishioner for which we are most grateful.
We are awaiting approval from the city and then installation will take approximately 10 days.
For more information, contact Geoff Doughlin at gdoughlin@gmail.com or
Bob Abbott at abbott@mindspring.com.

Sunday, February 1, 12:30 p.m.
At the recent Diocesan Convention, a resolution was adopted
"to promote policies that combat adverse climate change." In response to this, a group is forming at Christ Church Riverdale for those who want to engage more seriously with environmental stewardship/climate change issues.  The first meeting will be held on February 1.
If you are interested or want more information, please contact Anita Dutt or JoAnne Kraus.

Saturday, February 7, 10:30 am
The New York Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians and The
Anti-Racism Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of New York invite us to participate in the celebration of the life and work of Absalom Jones at
The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, New York.
This is a wonderful multicultural celebration of Absalom Jones' life honoring him as the First African American Episcopal Priest and a pioneer in multicultural worship.   For more information contact Roberta Todd at

Sunday, February 8, after each service
The expanded Outreach and Social Justice Committee invites everyone to view the film Selma (at your convenience) in preparation for a congregation-wide conversation after each service on February 8.
GUEST PREACHER- Sunday, February 22
We are happy to welcome the Rev. Fletcher Harper of GreenFaith as our guest preacher for both services.  Rev. Harper is an Episcopal priest and GreenFaith's Executive Director.  Under his leadership, GreenFaith has developed innovative programs linking religious belief and practice to the environment.
An award winning spiritual writer and nationally recognized preacher on the environment, he teaches and speaks at houses of worship from a range of denominations in New Jersey and nationwide about the moral, spiritual basis for environmental stewardship and justice.
A graduate of Princeton University and Union Theological Seminary, he served as a parish priest for 10 years and in leadership positions in the Episcopal Church before becoming GreenFaith's Executive Director.
The 238th Convention of our Diocese took place in Tarrytown, NY on
November 14 and 15.  Each year, important issues affecting the people and parishes in our diocese are discussed and resolutions are made and adopted which then direct special projects and ministries.
Resolutions were made regarding climate change, human sex trafficking, slavery, public safety, use of force and economic justice.
One of the exciting projects moving forward is the creation of the Episcopal Diocese of New York Credit Union.  Locations will be placed in areas underserved by traditional financial institutions and a target of predatory lenders.
Pick up a highlights sheet from the Welcome Table in the Parish Hall or visit episcopaldioceseofnewyork.org for more information and to see the Bishop's address.

The Kingsbridge, Riverdale, Marble Hill Food Bank is in need of donations. Please bring canned or boxed foods which have not expired and are not perishable on any Sunday.  They may be left in the basket at the back of the church or in the basket in the parish hall.

There are many unemployed and underemployed families depending on this Food Pantry.  Please see our coordinator, Anita Dutt for additional ways you can help.

CCR administers the Katherine Updegrove Jones Scholarship Fund.
These funds come from a bequest left to us by the late Robert E. Jones, a professor of French at MIT.  Dr. Jones envisioned a fund, named for his mother, to assist, in his words, "needy students to defray the costs of attending an Episcopalian parochial school from Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade."
It was Dr. Jones' gratitude for the support he received for his own education from members of this congregation that motivated his gift. These grants are offered , not for basic tuition, but to help cover costs of the "extras" at school, such as special courses, music lessons, or special sports or computer equipment.  We are fortunate to have the partnership of Prep-for-Prep in our outreach to Episcopal schools.  The grant-making committee looks at the purpose of a request and the way an applicant articulates a case for the award. Funds are granted late in December.  Grants vary in size and average $1,000.

This year, 10 grants were awarded to students attending Episcopal Schools.

Three of these students live in the Bronx.  Students receiving grants will be
with us at the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, June 14 as we honor them and all Christ Church Riverdale Scholars.  Contact Kathy Valyi at

kathyvalyi@gmail.com for more information.
